Catherine Tate and David Threlfall line up for The Enfield Haunting

Catherine Tate and David Threlfall will star in The Enfield Haunting, a new play based on one of the most famous poltergeist events in the world.

Written by Paul Unwin and directed by Angus Jackson, The Enfield Haunting will play at Brighton Theatre Royal and Richmond Theatre – where it plays from Tuesday, November 21 to Saturday, November 25, 2023 – before moving to the Ambassadors Theatre in London for a limited West End season from November 30, 2023 until March 2, 2024.

Tate (Doctor Who) will play Peggy Hodgson, a single mother who tries to protect her three children from something that is incomprehensible and deeply disturbing.

Threlfall (Shameless) plays ghost hunter Maurice Grosse.

The Hodgson’s had no idea what a poltergeist was when, in the summer of 1977, furniture and toys started moving of their own accord. They were an ordinary, working-class family, who lived in a North London council house at 284 Green Street, Enfield, but for the next 18 months became the centre of one of the most famous poltergeist events in the world.

Janet, the possessed 16-year-old, was nearly pulled out of a window. The local ‘lolly pop lady’ saw her floating six feet in the air in an upstairs room and Janet was found fast asleep in a neighbours’ bed. There are tapes of Janet growling for hours in a voice that doctors said would destroy a sixteen-year-old girl’s vocal cords after a few minutes.

Unwin’s play is the story of one night in the spring of 1978 when events were approaching a climax. Based on the first-hand accounts of one the one the ghost hunters, The Enfield Haunting is the true story of what happened when Peggy Hodgson tries to protect her three children from something that is incomprehensible, deeply disturbing and is hurtling to a terrifying conclusion.

Maurice Grosse was one of the ghost hunters. A kind and protective man, he was determined to help the Hodgson’s but as the night unfolds it slowly becomes clear that he is searching for something that he is convinced that only Janet can help him find.

Further cast and creatives will be announced in due course.

The Birds and the Bees land in Richmond

The Birds and the Bees, a comedy starring Helen Lederer and Michael Starke, arrives at Richmond Theatre as part of its UK tour this June.

On Gail’s East Anglian farm, the honeybees are beginning to dry up, just like her love life. She hasn’t had her chimney swept since her husband bolted. Her daughter’s marriage is drooping just like her turkey farm. Neighbour Earl’s sugar beet yield is turning sour, as are his one-night stands.

Perhaps bio-student Ben can buck up those bees and trigger those turkeys. It could be that some booze and a boogie at the annual Turkey Day Dance will clear the buzzing in their heads and show them it’s best to commit to those closest to you – only, don’t get stung!

Writer and actor Lederer (Absolutely Fabulous) stars as Gail, with Starke (Brookside) as Earl. They are joined on stage by Laura Doddington and Jacob Bukasa as Ben.

Originally a Canadian comedy written by Mark Crawford, it has been reimagined for a UK audience, shifting the action from modern-day Canada to Norfolk. Additional material comes from James McDermott.

The Birds and the Bees is a New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich, Norwich Theatre and Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds coproduction. It is directed by Peter Rowe. The set and costume designer is Dawn Allsopp, with lighting design from Richard G Jones. The casting director is Debbie O’Brien.

The Birds and the Bees plays at Richmond Theatre from June 6-10.

Richard E Grant books second night at Richmond

Richard E Grant has confirmed a second night at Richmond Theatre with his show An Evening with Richard E Grant.

Since his breakout role in cult classic film Withnail and I in 1987, Grant has starred in series such as Doctor Who, Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones, and films including Star Wars, Spice World and his Oscar-nominated turn in 2018’s Can You Ever Forgive Me?

On stage, he will now tell stories from his life, entwining tales from his extraordinary time in showbiz with uplifting reflections on love and loss, to celebrate the publication of his new book, A Pocketful of Happiness.

Live on stage, Richard will consider the inspiration behind the book – how, when his beloved wife Joan died in 2021 after almost 40 years together, she set him a challenge: to find a pocketful of happiness in every day. He found the instruction to be profoundly powerful, and this new book, drawing on both contemporary stories and recollections of his remarkable life and glittering career, is Richard’s way of honouring that challenge.

An Evening with Richard E Grant will be staged at Richmond Theatre on May 30-31.

Cast confirmed for Richmond’s Blood Brothers run

Niki Colwell Evans and Sean Jones have been confirmed in the lead roles of Blood Brothers, when it returns to Richmond Theatre this month.

They will continue in the roles of Mrs Johnstone and Mickey Johnstone, respectively, in Bill Kenwright’s legendary production of the musical.

The full cast for the 2023 tour includes Richard Munday (Narrator), Joe Sleight (Eddie), Paula Tappenden (Mrs Lyons), Olivia Sloyan (Linda), Timothy Lucas (Sammy), Tim Churchill (Mr Lyons), Nick Wilkes (Policeman/Teacher), Gemma Brodrick (Donna Marie/Miss Jones), Connor Bannister (Perkins), Josh Capper (Neighbour), Amy Murphy (Brenda) and Jacob Yolland (Bus Conductor).

Written playwright Willy Russell, Kenwright’s production passed the 10,000 performance mark in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone.

Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins separated at birth, who grow up on the opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with tragic consequences.

When Mrs Johnstone, a young mother, is deserted by her husband and left to her own devices to provide for seven hungry children, she takes a job as a housekeeper in order to make ends meet. It is not long before her brittle world crashes around her when she discovers herself to be pregnant yet again – this time with twins! In a moment of weakness and desperation, she enters a secret pact with her employer which leads inexorably to the show’s shattering climax.

Evans first rose to fame in 2007 when she reached the semi-final of season four of The X Factor UK mentored by Louis Walsh. She played Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers at the Phoenix Theatre between 2008-2009 and in 2010. She has also appeared in Kinky Boots as Trish (UK Tour 2018/21) and as Paulette in the musical adaptation of Legally Blonde (UK Tour 2012).

Jones’ stage credits include Macbeth (UK Tour and Singapore) and Jacqueline’s Wilson’s world premiere of Wave Me Goodbye (Theatr Clwyd).

Blood Brothers will run at Richmond Theatre from February 21-25, 2023.
