The world premiere of Trainspotting The Musical is set to take place this July at Theatre Royal Haymarket, with Robbie Scott making his West End debut in the lead role of Renton.

Thirty years after the film of the same name, the musical is written by Irvine Welsh (adapted from his debut novel) and directed and developed by Caroline Jay Ranger.

Trainspotting became the biggest grossing UK film of 1996. Three decades later, Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy and Kelly are back alongside an ensemble cast and a live band. Scott plays Renton, who was played in the film by Ewan McGregor. Further casting is to be announced.

The show features some of the music from the film, together with original “confrontational and celebratory” songs, with music and lyrics by Stephen McGuinness and Welsh, to tell a story that aims to speak to a contemporary malaise of defiance in the face of an uncertain future.

The creative team also includes set & costume designer Colin Richmond, musical supervisor, orchestrator & music director Stuart Morley, video designer Douglas O’Connell, choreographer Christina Andrea, lighting designer Ian Scott, sound designer Rory Madden, associate director Denise Ranger and casting director Anne Vosser.

Trainspotting The Musical plays Theatre Royal Haymarket from Wednesday, July 15. Tickets here.
